your birthday weekend

friday, your actual birthday, was a pretty typical day. that started with a pretty typical breakfast...and your pretty typical way of "showering" the table... and we had a great fun day playing. and of course later on, we had a pizza party followed by cake!! you barely waited for the cake to be put in front of you before you blew out the candle. we kept telling you to wait, so we could sing to you... and of course you dove right into the cake... you liked it... ;) shocker... so did someone else... ;) mmmmmm..... "what? i got frosting where?" as you can see, you ONLY eat the frosting... the party continued when your big sis built you a birthday "throne"... see that throne?!! happy birthday banner rigged up, pillow placed in the center and a tiny seat on top of the pillow ='s birthday throne! and you watched some of our movie (Peter Pan) from your throne... saturday we had a family birthday party for you....... where there were more sweets... and of course all you wanted was the cake and cookies... but not before dinner and...presents! the adorable birthday girl!! elena of course helped her little sis open... just about everyone got elena something too though...a little something or the same thing as ad got. it is very sweet, but i hope ya all realize you have to do this then at e's birthday too....and then stop. you're going to create monsters!! you totally hammed it up, ad, and showed off everything you got... and of course singing cards are such a big hit with you two girls... of course there were gifts that only ad got, that e already has but wanted... but of course it is ad's birthday.... and so of course someone pouted... when you were done, you said thank you again to everyone. ;) so then we got on to the good stuff! what you were waiting for! all coy when we were singing to you... ;) and as SOON as i said, "make a wish..." you blew your candle right out! then we encouraged you to take a bite, but you never did...i think you kinda wanted to though! HAPPY SECOND BIRTHDAY ADELYN!!! WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!

two years old

happy birthday to you
happy birthday to you
happy birthday dear adelyn
happy birthday to you!!

- you've climbed out of your crib once. i pray that you don't again for a long long time. i do NOT picture you staying in a big girl bed, like maybe ever. however...we have discussed letting you and sister sleep together for your birthday, we'll see.

- you love to count, but barely actually do. sometimes you say, "ahhn, oooh, reee." and sometimes everything is "reee."

- you run with a stiff torso, arms out and feet going up and out. it's the cutest little run ever.

- you draw pictures which are all scribbles. you hold up your paper each time you lift your crayon and say, "ah-da...see, mom, see!"

- you suck your thumb to sleep....and all.the.time otherwise. you love your thumb...and your ear, or our ears. you have to have hold of an ear while you suck your thumb.

- you also have a thing for belly buttons, or "belly butts" as you call them.

- you love to read books.

- you have developed your stalling skill quite well recently. you especially stall to go to sleep.

- you love being outside. you want to walk everywhere. you no longer like to be carried while out and often refuse to sit in a shopping cart and instead walk beside me.

- you have major meltdowns when you can't do/have something. meltdowns almost always include crying, but sometimes you just stand there and scream.

- you've been going through major sleep regressions this past year. it seems you've just started another in the last two weeks.

- you love to sleep with us. you love to be rocked and/or cuddled. we love it too. but you're a swatter while you sleep...you have to know we're there and you reach out and "tap" us to make sure. in the face. you also like to sleep horizontally in our bed.

- you get sooooo exited for things. you gasp loudly and squeal in delight...especially for food.

- you are not such a picky eater lately. you want to eat and eat and eat! it's been nice. maybe it's just a growth spurt, but we're loving it!

- you are very polite. you say "pease" and "ank you" and "bess you" and "cooz me" all the time.

- you also ask to do everything. when i put your plate in front of you, you ask "nen i eat now?" when you want to sit up on the couch you ask, "nen i sit up?" when you want to read, you ask "nen i get books?" etc. you ask to do everything that you know the answer is yes to and always end it with another "nen i, mommy?" it's very sweet.

- you don't always wake up happy. it takes you awhile usually to get going.

- you have a definite flare. i don't know exactly what it is, but you are spunky. you know what you want and you'll do what it takes to get it.

- you request mommy or daddy to help you with things. and it has to be who YOU want. you will try to go back and forth and back and forth to stall.

- you are wanting to dress yourself. you are getting better but still need lots of help. you are able to undress yourself with minimal assistance. you tear your diaper off as soon as it's available to you.

- you help pick out your clothes most days. but you will often pick out 2 shirts. i have to remind you of pants...and then you'll get pants. your favorite thing to pick out is socks. you never forget socks.

- you love shoes. you want to put on shoes all the time - yours, ours, your friends. it doesn't matter. you can put most of your shoes on by yourself.

- you mostly use your right hand, but still use both a lot.

- you love to color. you know most of the colors, but still get confused. you seem to prefer pink, purple and green.

- you use utensils perfectly. but if you are having anything sticky, you are always a sticky mess!

- you love all animals. you know LOTS of animals and the sounds they make.

- you don't articulate very well and can be hard to understand. i often have to ask you to repeat what you're saying and it takes me a minute. if i can't understand you, your sister usually can.

- you have the vocabulary and speak in full sentences.

- you love to play 'nap.' where you put yourself or your babies to sleep. you bring your dolls in bed with you and will spend lots of time putting them down for a nap. you sing 'rock-a-bye-baby' to them, cover them, lay with them. but when i ask if you want to actually sleep with them, you throw them out.

- you love to help. you'll help us do anything and everything and are eager and willing. if only this could last....

- you love to pretend to cook, bake, pack a picnic, have a tea party, etc. you love your pretend food too.

- you love to 'show' us everything. everything you do, everything you see - you make sure we see it too.

- you are a little mother to all your dolls. you seem to following right in lanie's footsteps here.

- you have taken on the role of a little sister impressingly well. you play so well with elena. you can tell you already look up to her. but you also are willing to fight for your place and won't be bossed.

- you spend a lot of time apologizing to "nena/nanie." ;)

- you're constantly asking, "why? why, mommy, why?" and when i tell you, you respond with either, "oh" or "but...."

- you laugh with your whole body and your smile is so contagious.

- your voice is the sweetest. i just absolutely love hearing you talk to us.

- you still have a bleach blonde patch of hair, a hazel stripe in your left eye, two birthmarks and no freckles...yet.

- your hugs are the best and boy, are you a hugger!!

happy birthday my beautiful adelyn! thank you for teaching me so much about myself in these last 2 years!

out of lanie's mouth...and ad's ;)

e: hey mommy, guess what i'm late for?
me: what are you late for?
e: oprah. i'm going to oprah. eliza (her baby doll) wants me to stay, but i can't stay cuz it's 10:00 and at 10:00 i have to go to oprah and i have to get there before they close.
me: they close?
e: yea, they close oprah. they have windows and they close like this (pretending to shut windows).
------------------------------------
e pretending to read a book...
e: this is my favorite, have you ever heard it?
me: i don't think so , come tell me.
e: on the night a boy was sleping on an old night in a mean dark cave and the bear came up from the water and a very bad creature who had a gray brown thing on her head, legs and wrists and she stealed away the sea berries. the bear and the girl were mean. they stealed away the berries. and then a creature begin to steal away all her bananas and all her food. that's not very nice, is it? they take away food and then sleep for a very long long long long long long long long long long loooooong time. and then a creature begin to come out of the water (demonstrating this) and went in the sand and sea berry beach and then they couldn't find anymore cuz they took all of them. then they took rainbow sherbert's boat, but blueberry couldn't find them. so she said "stop the boat and get some berries."
------------------------------------
e: i wish i could just help everyone cuz all i want to do is help.
------------------------------------
i'm tucking e in and she has gas...
me: good night elena...i love you. and i love being your mommy.
e: i love you too and i'm going to be a grown up some day and then i will be the mommy.
me: yea, i know...and you're going to love it too.
(this is how our conversation goes every night, but she added...)
e: when i grow up, i'm also going to be a doctor...so i can make my gas better.
------------------------------------
after we greeted each other in the morning...
e: ask me how my nap was, mom.
me: how was your nap, lanie?
e: well, sometimes when i closed my eyes i saw a mean green witch.
------------------------------------
while giving me a hug...
e: you're my best bestest friend. you're just so sweet and wonderful.
------------------------------------
e: i love you to the sun and around the moon and rainbow...and back.
------------------------------------
e: when i grow up i'm going to be a school bus driver, a doctor, a queen, and then a star.
------------------------------------
e: mommy, can you open my window lights?
me: your window lights? ...you mean your curtains?
e: yea, my window lights.

and out of little ad's mouth....

------------------------------------
me: do NOT eat that cup!! (paper cup, 4th time i've told her)
ad: but!.....mom!
------------------------------------
me: adelyn, are you being a nice girl?
ad: (thinking)...nooooo
------------------------------------
what i hear about everyday...
ad: nen (can) i watch shortcake, mommy? nen i?
------------------------------------
as we are sitting down for a movie night...
ad: nen (can) i have pa-cun (popcorn) en emmmm (m&m)?
------------------------------------
putting her down to sleep...
me: i love you, ad. and i love being your mommy.
ad: la-lu, mommy.

tgif

it's been one of those weeks where i tore the house apart for h.o.u.r.s. trying to find something.

it's been one of those weeks where i have learned to look in the linen closet for things my children hide from me. duh.

it's been one of those weeks where my pants have been tight.

it's been one of those weeks where i have put down the girl scout cookies and picked up veggies instead.

it's been one of those weeks where my color blind "leprachaun" couldn't tell between the green and blue dye to "pee" in the toilet.

it's been one of those weeks where fortunately my children didn't get scarred for life thinking leprachauns pee blue. whew.

it's been one of those weeks where i got to appreciate a whole day away getting inspired by wise and experienced mommas.

it's been one of those weeks where my girls have been going to bed late.

it's been one of those weeks where at least one of my girls has been crawling in bed with me...and i'm enjoying it.

it's been one of those weeks where all i want to do is simplify, yet i keep bringing stuff in.

it's been one of those weeks where i've looked at my house in disgust. why can't leprachauns clean instead?!

it's been one of those weeks where i wake up in the middle of the night thinking of paint colors. seriously - how are you supposed to decide from a sample that is half the size of my credit card?!

it's been one of those weeks where i've been b.l.a.r.i.n.g. the music in my car every time i'm alone.

it's been one of those weeks where i have felt sorry for complete strangers because i was made aware of how spirtually stunted they are.

it's been one of those weeks where i realized i picked out the same carpet and tile that we already have.

it's been one of those weeks where the girls went 72 hours without a bath. yup.

it's been one of those weeks where i'm feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, but extremely lucky!

it's been one of those weeks where i realize it's ben just like every other week. ;) and i'm really grateful for that.

happy st patty's day

gotta love the holidays!! kids make them soo much fun!! long gone are our days of drinking green beer...and that is a wonderful thing. (this is the work of adelyn - pretty good i think ;))
and those silly leprachauns knew right where to find some lucky lads!!!
the leprachauns came and turned this house upside down!! there was furniture flipped over, stacked up and on top of tables! the couch cushions were switched or where they shouldn't be... (ad was interested in the chaos, but did NOT want to get too close it)
pointing out more of the leprachauns' trickiness...half excited, half scared...
like how they toilet papered ceiling fans...
and lanie's bed... (which ad wouldn't go near)
and yes, those crazy little green guys even put a ketsup bottle to sleep in her bed...
they even peed green in our toilet and "forgot to flush," according to elena.

hope you had a happy and lucky st. patty's day!!

And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go."

first of many

the other night after bath, the girls cozied up together and started reading book after book. they looked so cute that i grabbed my camera to capture the precious moment...
once i grabbed my camera it lasted just that - a moment. a moment before i was being told to "shoo."
and for the first time ever (but of-course-definitely-positively-without-a-doubt-for-absolute-sure not the last), i heard a playful and giggly "leave us alone."
and then...they retreated. to what's been their hideout lately. to get away from the momma.
"wait for me..."
and there she goes too...
thankfully they are still so young that they were tickled pink to discover i in fact stayed to wonder and long for where my girls were... and didn't leave.
they kept popping out and their smiles and giggles said, "oh good, she's still there."
and they'd disappear again...
if i peaked in on them....they pretended to be sleeping. right now that's what they think hideout's are about. ;)
lanie even keeps a pillow under there. ha. (seriously, it's there all the time for when they're in their hideout)
of course i would see eyes open...
wanting me to 'catch' them...
i know these two will be finding many hideouts...many ways to keep momma out. and that's ok. i actually really like the thought of that (probably not so much when it does indeed hapen). so for now i will climb in when i'm invited and join the tiny crew.
yes, i fit under the crib with my girls. no, you do not get to see a picture of it.
